New! PhD Opportunity with the Social Work Disability Research Hub
The Social Work Disability Research Hub is currently inviting applications from candidates who are interested in pursuing doctoral research. An Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship is available for an eligible candidate to start this year.
Potential areas of research could include:
- The Transition to Independent Living study – a co-designed study with young adults with disability exploring independence and the transition to independent living - you will work with a dynamic team led by Dr Lyndal Hickey, Senior Lecturer, Social Work. Lyndal's research is focused on understanding and improving health and social outcomes for children and young people living with disability or health conditions, and their families and strengthening communities to create inclusive opportunities for all.
- A co-designed study into peer-led peer support for adults with Acquired Brain Injury - this work is being spearheaded by Dr Lauren Kosta, Senior Lecturer, Social Work. Lauren's primary focus is on trauma recovery and building resilience.
- Service navigation, community inclusion and the NDIS - Dr Jen Davidson who is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work is leading this important research focused on how individuals and families can be supported to navigate and make decisions in complex service systems.
Applicants are also invited to propose other ideas related to social work, family strengths and community inclusion, and living with disability.

Due to funding restrictions, this opportunity is open to domestic students only and must commence between May and November 2025. The scholarship offers a living allowance of $38,500 per year (2025 full-time study rate) for up to 3.5 years. The allowance may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, maternity and parental leave. The successful applicant will join an interdisciplinary team of academics.
Scholarship applicants must meet the entry requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy – Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, including English language requirements.
